Lake Tahoe is best known for its beautiful mountains and has one of the purest water lakes in the world.
History
Lake Tahoe is about two million years old. Native Americans found this lake and called it home. The Washoe Tribe used this lad to camp, hunt, and fish. The Washoe people considered the lake sacred because it contains life-sustaining water. The lake's name 'Tahoe' was due to a pronunciation of the Washoe word - Da ow a ga which means 'edge of the lake'. The 1850s was the height of the California Gold Rush and brought visitors and prospectors. Many people and events have contributed to the Tahoe that we know today. Tahoe aims to protect and preserve the natural beauty and resources of this beautiful place. Today, about 15 million people visit Lake Tahoe per year.
