History

In 1839, George Yount was the first to plant grapes in Napa Valley - the town of Yountville was later named after him. . In 1861, Charles Krug was the first to open a commercial winery in Napa Valley. Many other wineries open over the next 20 years. The 1980s was a tough time for Napa Valley, more than 80 percent of the grapevines were destroyed by the root louse phylloxera. The phylloxera plague lasted for more than 100 years. Finally in the 1940s, Napa Valley started to recover from the plague and prohibition.
