History


San Francisco was originally a Spanish mission and pueblo before it was conquered by the United States in 1846. In 1848, San Francisco became the central port of the Gold Rush. The city's population rapidly grew due to the increased migration of “forty-niners”. For a period of time, the city lacked structure causing it to be lawless. The 1906 earthquake and fire was a devastating point in San Francisco's history because of the destruction that was caused. Even though the earthquake destroyed most of the city, it did not stop the city from thriving. Today, San Francisco is one of the most popular cities in the world. Golden Gate Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge is must visit attraction if you are in San Francisco. The Golden Gate Bridge is one of the seven wonders of the world and attracts more than ten million visitors per year. The bridge is about 1.7 miles long and can easily be walked. The bridge was created to connect the two cities and counties - San Francisco and Marin.

Alcatraz Island

Alcatraz Island

Alcatraz Island was originally developed in the mid 19th century by the U.S Army in order to protect San Francisco Bay. Alcatraz was the site of the first lighthouse on the coast of California. The island became a prison by the late 1850s where military prisoners were housed. The prison later housed one of the most famous American gangsters and businessman, Al Capone - "Scarface". Alcatraz Island closed its operations by 1963. Today, Alcatraz is toured by people from all walks of life. While in San Francisco, Alcatraz Island is a must see!

Golden Gate Park

Golden Gate Park is the third most visited park in the United States. The park was built in the late 19th century so that people had a space to escape from their everyday work life.

There is no admission charge for entering the park, but some of the more popular attractions charge an admission fee.

Golden Gate Park has many attractions. Some of the more popular attractions include: Japanese Tea House and Garden, California Academy of Sciences, Conservatory of Flowers, and the Windmill and Tulips. Check out the park's website to get tickets and access maps click here

Painted Ladies

The pastel-colored Victorian homes on Steiner Street are iconically known for their beautiful architecture. They are a reminder of “old” San Francisco but with a reminder of “new” San Francisco because the scenic background.
